More surreal than dinner at a NASCAR track was the air show that took place right behind our hotel the weekend we were in Daytona Beach for Kelly & Seagram’s wedding.
I had never been to such a thing before, so I had no idea what to expect. The sound of the F-16′s afterburner overhead nearly killed me. I don’t think I had ever heard anything so loud in my life.
The show was impressive and interesting insofar as it’s hard not to be amazed watching planes large and small zooming around twisting, turning for your entertainment.
On another level, I was a little creeped out by what was primarily a military parade in the air showing off the might and power of the armed forces. It’s something I always imagined happened during the cold war but died out now.
It makes me think of Robert Frank photos and missiles being driven down main street to saluting children who have no conception of the destructive power before them.
