Hong Kong is beautiful. I fell for it the moment I looked out the window of the Midlevel apartment we stayed in. The view of the world below, the harbor and Kowloon off in the distance made me want to find explore it as much as I could. That view probably also ruined me for The Peak.

Listed as one of the ‘must see’ sites in Hong Kong, I was resistant to the idea of it from the start. There’s a funicular tram that climbs up the side of the mountain taking you – and the hundred other tourists crammed inside – to the highest point on the island.
It sounds amazing, but if I’ve learn anything from working across from the Empire State Building it’s that commerce and crowds can make even the greatest experiences just not worth it.
Still, we went, and discovered that at the top of the mountain stands a multi-story mall with among dozens of shops, a Bubba Gump’s. It was disappointing, but, at the end of the day, we got to go back to a view that was easily as good without the lines and lights and nonsense.
