Montreal: Plateau Mont Royal

Nuit Blanche in Plateau Mont Royal
July 25th, 2012

I’ve been a fan of Montreal since my first trip there a decade ago. That time, I made the mistake of going in November – which is really winter there. I got there just in time for a two day snowstorm that left a couple feet of accumulation on the ground. Lesson learned, I made a point of going earlier in the year on subsequent trips, but I never made it there during the summer.
Going in June this time, I got the brand new experience of being immersed in crowds of Montrealers walking through the street festivals and block parties that make up for all the forced indoor time from November to April.

The neighborhood is part of the historic French part of town, although we found no problems speaking English anywhere.
The weekend we were there was also when Nuit Blanche sur la Tableau – a huge street festival took over the most of Mont Royal Avenue east of St Laurent and as far down as we could see. Much like my beloved Atlantic Antic, the festival lets local shops and restaurants and bars spread out onto the streets For the community. Even better though, it took place from Thursday through Sunday – pretty much the entire time we were there.
Every day, we could walk mere feet from our apartment to find music and snacks and a convivial crowd of locals enjoying the weather.

On our last night, watching the festival wrap up was a sad reminder that we’d be heading back home the next day. I don’t know when our next trip is going to happen, but chances are high that we’ll ditch the hotels again and go for nice apartment in the Plateau.
